Wasp Pest Control
In the UK there are approximately 9,000 Wasp species many of which are never seen and are so small you would need a microscope to see them. These tiny bugs do not cause any problems, however there are 7 species of Social Wasps that live in colonies. Most of the wasps that live in a colony are infertile female workers with a Queen wasp that reproduces.
The most common of the 7 types of social wasp in the UK are the Common Wasp [ Vespula vulgaris ] and the German Wasp [ Vespula germanica ]. The other 5 types of social wasp in the UK are: The Cuckoo Wasp, Hornet [ the largest ], Norwegian Wasp, Red Wasp and Tree Wasp.
Common and German Wasps look alike and have similar nesting habits, building their nests in trees, in the walls of buildings, inside buildings, such as in an attic or loft, in chimneys and also underground. These insect pests can also build their nests in bushes or in garden sheds.
Wasps are helpful insects in the garden pollinating flowers and crops as well as keeping the population down of spiders, woodlice and other insects. However if disturbed wasps will sting as a defence mechanism and in late summer they can become a real nuisance.
The Life Cycle of Wasps is that the Queen Wasp will begin to build a nest in early Spring and begin laying her eggs and after around 30 days these eggs hatch as adult female, infertile worker wasps. The Queen Wasp continues to lay eggs and the workers forage for food to feed the increasing brood and in return the wasp larvae produce a sugary spit that the workers can drink.
The colony continues to grow as does the nest and when it is big enough, the Queen starts to breed mating wasps [ male and female ] who leave the nest to mate but rarely do the males and females from the same nest mate. Once mating has taken place, the male 'drones' die off and the young Queen wasps then find somewhere to overwinter ready for the next years cycle. It is at this time, normally in late summer, that the workers begin to be a problem for us humans as they no longer have a purpose, having no brood to take care of and no sugary spit to drink. The workers then go on the hunt for food and ripe or decaying fruit is ideal as well as the sweet smell of goodies that we humans may be enjoying such as food in our picnics or on our barbeques!
However at any time from Spring to Autumn you may see large numbers of worker wasps and you may notice them flying in or out of a particular area where they probably have their nest. Any wasp nest outdoors in the garden or indoors should be destroyed to stop the chance of wasp stings that are painful and sometimes can cause a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis which needs emergency treatment.
How to Get Rid of a Wasps Nest:
There are two types of treatments to kill and destroy a wasps nest depending on whether the nest is visible or not visible.
Where the wasps nest can be seen, use our Wasp Nest Killer Pack 1 which contains a foam spray that projects a jet of wasp killer liquid onto the wasps nest from a distance of several feet. The foam canister should be fully used onto the nest and then it will penetrate the wasps nest to also kill the wasps inside.
Where the wasps nest cannot be seen but the wasps are flying into a hole, use our Wasp Nest Killer Pack 2 which contains a powder which can be used direct from the puffer pack container or with the use of a Dust Blower to enable a deeper penetration into the hole or cavity where the wasps have built their nest. It will take up to 24 hours to kill the wasp nest with this method and wasps will continue to return to the nest during this time and will enter the nest and then die.
Often wasps nests are found by accident in attic, loft or roof void spaces. When trying to kill a wasps nest in attics, lofts or roof voids, care should be taken and any light used to illuminate the area to show the wasps nest should be placed away from yourself as the wasps will fly towards the light.
If, during the season, you have a wasps nest in your chimney stack, the best way to tackle this problem is to use 4 x Smoke Bomb Fumers .These fumigation smokes will kill the wasps that are around outside of the nest but then you would need to access the chimney, to give a wasps nest destroyer treatment, as wasps may still be active inside.
The best time to kill any wasps nest is at dusk when wasps have returned to the nest and are less active.
